Increasing Mental Health Services in Public Schools

A 17 page paper discussing the problems of and reasons for lack of mental health services availability in public schools. The paper discusses structural changes in schools organization; cognitive therapy; cultural implications; interdisciplinary efforts; and recent attempts to increase mental health services to public schools. The paper concludes that the programs promoted by the President's Commission have been shown to be highly effective and school-specific programs are available at low or no cost aside from the cost of screeners' time. Concerned school-based social workers should conduct a full cost-benefit analysis to take to the local government. Though screening and treatment of public school students can be costly, it also should supply extensive cost savings to the community in terms of adult care that can be avoided in the future. Initial Organized Substance Abuse Intervention

An 11 page paper that describes the pre-intervention assessment methods and the facts behind the substance abuse habits of a loving but highly angry 16-year-old boy. Bill is the product of pugnacious and alcoholic homes, and trying his best to stay away from the drugs to which he feels so drawn. He is constantly in trouble at school; his dark anger brought him to juvenile court on assault charges filed by his stepmother. Bill's assessment revealed that his risk levels were not so severe that state-supported inpatient treatment could be justified, but it was clear he could not return either to his mother's or father's home. He did have an alternative, and one that worked for him. Bill is a very real character; the paper contains no fiction. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Investigating Advice on Communication Between Couples

An 8 page paper comparing the theories of 5 self-help relationship books to the findings of current communications research reports. There are very good self-help books available discussing the male-female romantic relationship, but the reader does indeed need to be aware of the discrepancies of many of them with both current communications research findings and common sense. With the exception of Gray, every one of the problems discussed in both the books and the communications journal articles referenced for this paper has as its base a lack of honesty on the part of at least one, and normally both involved players. Whether that lack of honesty is intentional or not, it nevertheless is there and blocks the path of any true and lasting relationship. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
